The Borg Timeline

This is a reproduction of a Borg timeline I wrote some time ago to help explain the inconsistencies in the Star Trek timeline dealing with the Borg. It's based on observation along with my own conjecture and storytelling skills.

April 3rd-4th, 2063 - A Borg sphere from the year 2373 travels back through time to this point in history to try and stop Zefram Cochrane's warp flight and prevent humanity's first contact with life forms from another planet. The sphere manages to fire a few volleys at Cochrane's complex in central Montana but the sphere is destroyed by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E which followed them back through their temporal incursion. Several large peices of debris from the sphere fall to Earth and crash in the arctic. 2 drones survive intact but are unable to reactivate themselves. The warp flight is a success thanks to the help of the Enterprise's crew and Earth makes first contact with the Vulcans. The Enterprise returns to the 24th century.

2067 - While visiting Princeton University Zefram Cochrane begins telling stories about what really happened during first contact involving the cybernetic creatures and a group of humans from the future. He even mentions it during a commencement address. He later recants the story (thanks to Lily Sloan's efforts) but it remains an urban legend among Cochrane's admirers.

2152 - A glacier recedes in the arctic revealing the debris from the Borg sphere that was destroyed in 2063 and is detected by orbiting satellites. A Starfleet official who is also a member of the then fledgling section 31 suspects a security risk he orders a scientific survey team to investigate. The scientists find the frozen remains of 2 Borg drones and examine them taking some scans and photographs that are sent back to Starfleet. Thawed out, the Drones are able to reactivate and assimilate the survey team and their transport vessel. After having collected the debris they leave Earth on a course for Borg space. Starfleet detects the transport leaving Earth's atmosphere and send a team to the crash site to investigate. They discover the debris, and scientists missing. The Enterprise NX-01 is alerted to the transport's position and is ordered to intercept it. The assimilated transport attacks a Tarkalean freighter and manages to assimilate its entire crew. 2 Tarkaleans are rescued by the NX-01 but they escape from the sickbay and try to sabotage the ship. They are stopped but the ship's Denobulan doctor Phlox is partially assimilated. The Enterprise is unfortunately forced to destroy the transport with all hands but not before it transmits a subspace signal to Borg space. Dr Phlox manages to stop the assimilation process and informs Captain Archer of the transmission. Science officer T'Pol notes that any transmission would take nearly 200 hundred years to reach the Delta Quadrant Archer states that they've only put off the invasion til the 24th century. The Section 31 official has all information on the incident classified for the time being.

2289 - The U.S.S. Avenger NCC-1854 intercepts a small fleet of ships belonging to the El-Aurians who are seeking refuge in the Federation. The El-Aurians tell stories of how their homeworld was destroyed by a species calling themselves the Borg. The descriptions of the attackers make their way to several high ranking officials of Section 31. The officials note the similarities between the El-Aurian attackers and the creatures encountered in 2152. Secret research is started on the Borg threat.

2350 - Realizing that the transmission from 2152 would soon be reaching its target a Starfleet captain named J.P. Hanson also in the service of Section 31 gave all pertinent information on the Borg to his son exobiologist Magnus Hanson in hopes of finding a defense.

2351 - The Borg detect a severely fragmented subspace transmission originating from somewhere on the far edge of the galaxy near the border between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. A cube is dispatched to investigate.

2352 - Magnus along with his wife Erin and young daughter Annika leave on the U.S.S. Raven NAR-32450 in hopes of finding evidence of the Borg. They encounter the cube the Borg dispatched a year earlier. The cube shows no interest in the Raven and returns to Borg space finding nothing of interest. The Raven follows the cube into a transwarp conduit into the Delta quadrant the Borg's home territory. They are never heard from again in the Federation. Admiral Hanson leaves Section 31 distraught over the disappearance of his son and granddaughter.

2353-2356 - The Hansens are able to study the cube for 3 years thanks to a piece of technology called a bio-dampener which makes them invisible to the Borg. Unfortunately Magnus' dampener fails and the Borg assimilate the Hansen family.

2356-2364 - Intrigued by the Raven and her crew the Borg send several more cubes over the years to investigate the origin of the transmission. Among the casualties are the Miranda class U.S.S. Tombaugh NCC-21579 which is assimilated in 2362 and the Federation and Romulan colonies in sectors 30 and 31 in 2364.

2365 - Q flings the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D to the system J-25 and encounter one of the survey cubes there they make official first contact. The Borg deem the Enterprise worthy of assimilation and begin to pursue it. The Enterprise is rescued at the last moment by Q. Upon returning Starfleet command is informed of the Borg threat. Starfleet and Section 31 assign Commander Shelby to the task of studying and creating a defense against the Borg.

2366 - The same cube from system J-25 arrives in Federation space. There it assimilates the starship U.S.S. Lalo the New Providence colony and the captain of the Enterprise-D Jean-Luc Picard. A fleet of 40 starships intercept the cube at Wolf 359 in hopes of stopping it. All but one ship the U.S.S. Endeavor NCC-71805 were destroyed. The cube was destroyed however when an away team from the Enterprise managed to rescue captain Picard from the collective and used his connection to the Borg to implant a 'sleep' order in the cube, making it regenerate, and that created a power-net feedback, destroying it.

2366-2373 -Starfleet develops several new defenses against the Borg including the prototypical warship the U.S.S. Defiant .

2373 - A Borg cube once again tried to assimilate Earth. An armada of Starfleet ships including the U.S.S. Defiant intercepted it at the Typhon sector. The cube broke through the fleet lines and proceeded to Earth though it was forced to fight a running battle. The Defiant managed to stay intact for the entirety of the battle. The cube eventually reaches Earth but is stopped when the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E arrives and Captain Picard discovers a weakness in the cube's shield matrix which he transmits to the rest of the fleet. All the remaining ships concentrate their fire on the weak spot and destroy the cube. A Borg sphere escapes the destruction and attempts to travel back in time to stop humanity's first warp flight but is followed by the Enterprise and stopped.
